While many rumors link Steven Stamkos to Kent Hughes, Martin St-Louis, and the Montreal Canadiens, Eric Engels has just surprised us.

Contrary to the information circulating for some time in the NHL, the Sportsnet journalist believes, on the contrary, that Steven Stamkos will stay with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Steven Stamkos as an acquisition for Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens? Eric Engels gives his opinion

See what he mentioned in his most recent article when asked about the possibility of Stamkos as a summer acquisition for the Habs.

Question:

"Is Stamkos a realistic option for the Habs? And how important would the connection with St-Louis be for Stamkos?"

Eric Engels' answer:

"Not really.

But I don't think he will be a realistic option for any team, except for the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Stamkos wants to retire as a member of this team and they want to give him a chance to do so. I still think that's the only realistic scenario for now.

But if the relationship were to break down between Stamkos and the Lightning, I would say the connection with Martin St-Louis would be one of the only things that could make Stamkos consider signing in Montreal."

He believes that the Canadiens would be interested in signing Steven Stamkos, but he doesn't seem to believe in this possibility much, unlike other analysts.

Stamkos, 34, was the first overall pick in 2008 and he still amassed a very solid 81 points in 79 games this season, including 40 goals.

Yes, he is 34 years old, but he is still one of the best players in the world and he loves hockey.
