Major trade offer between the Habs and Canes involving 4 elements
An intriguing trade offer has just been raised by a Montreal Canadiens analyst, involving young defenseman Logan Mailloux.
A recurring theme, surprisingly, for some time now.
As part of a discussion on what he would do if he were in Kent Hughes' shoes as the Canadiens' general manager this summer, analyst Marc-Olivier Beaudoin mentioned this:
The package would be 1st WPG + Logan Mailloux (yes, he will be good, but you have to give to get!) + another asset (player/pick/prospect). If that doesn't work, I would offer less to try to acquire a Dawson Mercer, Alex Holtz, or Jack Quinn.»
So it would look like this:
- Martin Necas
TO CAROLINA
- 27th overall pick 2024 (1st WPG)
- Logan Mailloux
- Another pick or a prospect like Sean Farrell
Necas, 25, was the 12th overall pick (1st round) in the 2017 draft. He is a 6-foot-2 center who can also play on the wing. He is really excellent.
This season, he accumulated 53 points in 77 games, including 24 goals, and he had 71 points in 82 games last season with Carolina.
During the 2024 playoffs, he was solid with 9 points, including 4 goals, in 11 games against the Islanders and the New York Rangers.

A trade involving Logan Mailloux and Martin Necas, a difficult plan to sell to fans
It is clear that trading young Logan Mailloux won't please the fans, so if we can keep Mailloux and acquire a Dawson Mercer, Alex Holtz, or Jack Quinn, that would be my preferred solution.
I would rather trade the Jets' 2024 first-round pick + Justin Barron + another pick/prospect/player to get a Mercer or a Holtz.

It's always fun to discuss and put ourselves in Kent Hughes' shoes, but we will ultimately have the answer in a few weeks.
In any case, we know that Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton are working on such a transaction. They will attempt a new trade like the Kirby Dach/Alex Newhook deal.
