Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens officially have a big decision to make regarding forward Jake Evans. He is clearly increasing his value as the trade deadline approaches, and all indications suggest that the Habs could fetch a first-round pick in return for his services.

So, what is the best decision to make?

Should they trade Evans for a first-round pick because his contract is expiring, or should they try to offer him a new contract worth approximately $4 to $5 million per year?

This is the major dilemma facing the Montreal Canadiens' management at the moment.

Trade or not trade Jake Evans?

After last night's win against the Tampa Bay Lightning, we had a very interesting discussion between two sharp hockey minds on the topic.

This could help you form an opinion on the matter.

Here's a snippet from their discussion, starting with the main assertion:

What's the point of trading Jake Evans for a first-round pick?

If you're drafting near the end of the first round, you're lucky if you draft.. Jake Evans.

- Nicolas Cloutier, TVA Sports

They then continued the discussion.

And what if the first-round pick acquired in this trade allows you to move up? Or if you use it as part of a package to acquire a good young player?

Because a first-round pick is a valuable asset before it becomes an actual selection!

If the first-round pick lets you get something tangible, why not?

But the Canadiens really, truly don't need to add more picks to their collection.

- Nicolas Cloutier

Maxime Truman later added his own two cents.

This will certainly be a fascinating story to follow.

Personally, I'd find it very difficult to decide.

If you had told me a few months ago that the Canadiens could get a first-round pick for Jake Evans, I would have jumped on the opportunity immediately.

However, he's playing so well and is so valuable to the Habs right now that I don't see how they can let him go.

What would you do?
