On BPM Sports, the well-known insider Pierre LeBrun dropped major news about a negotiated trade involving goaltender Jacob Fowler.

In the last few hours, we learned that Kent Hughes officially attempted to acquire goaltender Yaroslav Askarov.

Following that, LeBrun has just added more information.

The Nashville Predators requested Jacob Fowler in the Yaroslav Askarov trade

So, we now understand why Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton refused.

During his segment on Georges Laraque and Stéphane Gonzalez's show, the insider indeed revealed that GM Barry Trotz wanted Jacob Fowler in exchange for Yaroslav Askarov.

'LeBrun didn't beat around the bush: there were discussions between the Canadiens and the Preds about a trade. Where did things get stuck?

It was when Barry Trotz tried to convince Kent Hughes to send him Jacob Fowler in the deal.' - Marc-Olivier Cook

The Canadiens want nothing to do with trading Fowler, and I completely agree with them.

'There's no way the Canadiens are trading Fowler.'- Pierre LeBrun

This says a lot about the value of the young goaltender in the eyes of the Habs' management.

Let's recall that Nashville ultimately received 19-year-old forward David Edstrom, goaltender Magnus Chrona, and a conditional first-round pick in 2025 (for Yaroslav Askarov).

Knowing that Predators General Manager Barry Trotz absolutely wanted Jacob Fowler included in the Askarov deal, I genuinely believe Kent Hughes made the right decision in refusing and letting the San Jose Sharks win this derby.
