For the first time since his arrival as General Manager of the Montreal Canadiens, Kent Hughes has still not acquired a top 6 forward via trade.

This would be the first time he has not managed such a summer transaction, but the offseason is not over yet.

Rest assured that Kent Hughes has tried, but he is smart, and he will not make a trade just for the sake of making a trade.

He will only do it if the price is right.

In 2022, he acquired Kirby Dach, and in 2023, he obviously acquired Alex Newhook.

Who will be the Dach/Newhook of 2024 for Montreal? Will there be one?

This is the topic that was recently addressed by the excellent Steven Ellis.

The Canadiens will announce a trade sooner or later according to Steven Ellis, and it could involve the young Rutger McGroarty

During a recent Q&A session, and as reported by my colleagues at Marqueur, the journalist mentioned that a trade could be announced soon, particularly targeting a certain Rutger McGroarty.

«I think a trade to address other needs will be made sooner rather than later, but we also know that they [Montreal Canadiens] won't be backed into a corner this season.

The trade must make sense in the long term, like Rutger McGroarty for example.»

It's interesting. So there is hope for those who are hoping that a trade will finally be announced by the Montreal Canadiens before the season begins, a trade for a top 6 forward.

Kent Hughes has never hidden that his intention is to acquire another forward like Kirby Dach or Alex Newhook.

After all, it wouldn't be the first time that Hughes announces a trade in the middle of August.

He did it in August 2022 and in August 2023 as well!

McGroarty, 20 years old, is a 14th overall pick in 2022 (1st round). He is a 6-foot-1, 200-pound forward who scored a solid 52 points in 36 games in 2023-2024 in the NCAA.

He is very promising, but he has yet to prove that he can be a solid top 6 NHL forward, unlike a Martin Necas or a Trevor Zegras.

However, he is likely to be less expensive to acquire.

It's a situation to watch, in any case.
