Following today's announced trade, there is an unexpected change affecting the Montreal Canadiens and the New Jersey Devils.

We briefly mentioned this in our article published this afternoon to announce the trade concluded between the Devils and the Calgary Flames, but it indeed has a direct impact on Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens.

The trade announced today for Jacob Markstrom is bad news for the Habs

Now that the excellent goaltender Markstrom has been acquired by the New Jersey Devils via trade...

This officially relegates Jake Allen to a backup role, which will clearly cause the Canadiens to lose a second-round pick.

But that's not all.

« In one trade that doesn't involve the Habs we got screwed twice:

-The 1st from CGY most likely turns to a 1st from FLA, so it's going to be a late first

-Jake Allen is definitely not playing 40 games next year so the Habs lose on a 2nd round pick

Great day!»

- Alex Jodoin

So indeed, it's a trade that is really not ideal for Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens, but well, it's part of things we unfortunately cannot control.

Regarding Calgary's first-round pick mentioned above, it's the pick acquired in the trade to add Sean Monahan and his contract, a transaction concluded in August 2022.

We could hope that it would become a top 15 or top 12 overall pick, remaining Calgary's pick, but now it's definitely more likely to be a very late first-round pick.

It's a pick that depends on many conditions.
