As you surely know, in August 2022, Kent Hughes possibly completed one of the most complicated transactions in NHL history by acquiring Sean Monahan and a first-round pick in exchange for future considerations.
This first-round pick came with 10,000 words of conditions (we're barely exaggerating), but a few years later, especially following the trade announced yesterday involving Jacob Markstrom, the picture is finally becoming clearer.
Now that the Flames traded their goaltender Jacob Markstrom to the New Jersey Devils yesterday, it seems they are taking a few steps back in their "reset."
Reminder of the trade announcement:
This trade changes the scenario for the Montreal Canadiens.
Considering their 2025 first-round pick is protected if it's in the top 10, and considering it is now likely to be in the top 10, Kent Hughes would instead receive the Florida Panthers' first-round pick in the end (according to one of the many clauses in the initial trade).
Obviously, the Panthers' first-round pick is likely to be much later, so this trade announced yesterday between the Calgary Flames and the New Jersey Devils really changes the scenario for our Montreal Canadiens.
A story to follow over the next year.
