Unexpected turn of events regarding Patrick Kane's future
The NHL free agency market kicked off yesterday, and several renowned free agents such as Ryan O'Reilly, Matt Duchene, Alex Killorn, Dmitry Orlov, Blake Wheeler, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Max Pacioretty, and Michael Bunting have all signed a contract with a new team.
However, Patrick Kane, one of the best forwards available this summer, has not yet reached an agreement with an NHL team.
According to information reported by Elliotte Friedman during his appearance on NHL Network, it would not be surprising if we had to wait several weeks before seeing the veteran sign a new contract.
"Friedman said on NHL Network that Patrick Kane will likely wait until he's healthy before signing with a team, so this could go into the beginning of next season." - Via NHL Watcher
Indeed, Friedman mentions that Kane wishes to wait until he is fully recovered from his injury before committing to a team. This means that an agreement might only materialize at the beginning of the next season.
Remember that the former Chicago Blackhawks' forward underwent hip surgery after the playoffs, and such an injury can usually require a recovery period of three to five months.
After an exceptional season during which he recorded 92 points in 2021-2022, the 34-year-old veteran experienced some difficulties last season, totaling only 21 goals and 36 assists in 73 games.
