In Marco D'Amico's most recent article (Montreal Hockey Now), we learn several very interesting tidbits about possible future trades of the Montreal Canadiens and Kent Hughes, because if you look closely at the club's roster (and surplus), it does indeed seem inevitable.
All indications are that Hughes will have to trade (or attempt to trade) a forward, or two, in the coming weeks and months.
On this subject, see what D'Amico says:
"According to various NHL sources, the three Habs forwards that would be available on the trade market are Christian Dvorak ($4.45 million salary), Mike Hoffman ($4.5 million salary) and Joel Armia ($3.4 million)." There would be different levels of interest, among NHL teams, towards these three elements. However, it would be Dvorak who attracts more attention now.
With the recent acquisitions of Kirby Dach and Sean Monahan, there seems to be congestion at center, so it makes sense.
According to D'Amico, Armia would also be a name to watch, as he has increased his value in the second half of the 2021-2022 season, with Martin St-Louis, and at the World Championship.
For Dvorak, Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton would likely target a young right-handed defenseman, or a veteran defenseman plus some future material (picks).
It will be interesting to see what Kent Hughes does to fix this situation, because it seems unlikely that he will start the season with so many forwards and so few defensemen.
So the three names clearly in the window would be: Dvorak, Hoffman and Armia.
Which one would you trade first, and what would you ask for in return?
