There was a big surprise to the NHL waivers, as goaltender Cal Petersen is now available for free to NHL teams.

"Whoa! Cal Petersen placed on waivers by the Kings!"

The pundits and journalists are reacting, and the excitement is palpable among fans of the various NHL teams in search of a goalie of the future.

Less than two years ago, Petersen was identified as a future NHL All-Star goaltender and was an untouchable with the Kings. In fact, he was the one who drove Jack Campbell out of Los Angeles.

Goalies like Robin Lehner once suggested that he was a top five goaltender in the world (Petersen) and he seemed to be on the same trajectory as a Jake Oettinger or an Ilya Sorokin.

Petersen started his career with two amazing rookie seasons (0.924 and 0.922% efficiency in 2020). Since then, things have gotten tough for Petersen and he seems to have completely lost his confidence.

He has a 5-3-2 record this season with the Kings and a 3.75 goals-against average.

Should Kent Hughes give him a fresh start, claim him, and see if he can become the star goalie he was meant to be?

Petersen was the best goalie in the NCAA from 2015-2017 (even being a captain of his team).

Claiming Petersen and trading Jake Allen at a high price, do we do it?

More details to follow!
