The Habs are surprising everyone in the hockey world with their good start to the season. We must admit that if Martin St-Louis' team continues to play with as much passion and maintain the pace, they could fight for a playoff spot this year.
In fact, Hughes made an important statement in the event that his team finds itself in a playoff race in the coming months.
Still, it's reassuring to see that CH management won't hurt the organization's long-term plan by trading a first-round pick to add help to their roster.
The priority will remain the same, to build a team that will be successful for a long time.
On the other hand, the fact that Hughes didn't mention that the plan remains the same for all parts of the organization scares me a bit and I'll explain.
If the goal before the season was to trade away strong elements of the team, such as Sean Monahan who will become a free agent at the end of the current campaign, the Canadiens' management can't deny themselves another first round pick for him, in order to try to make the playoffs.
The original plan must be maintained. If that plan involves trading pieces of the roster for the long-term good, it absolutely must be done even if it would impact the team's short-term success.
