His team, the Blackhawks, are all but eliminated from a playoff spot and they have already shown their intentions with the trade that shipped Brandon Hagel to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
But that trade was not the Blackhawks management's plan A regarding Hagel.
According to TSN's Darren Dreger, the forward was almost traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs, along with Marc-Andre Fleury. In return, Chicago reportedly received goaltender Petr Mrazek, prospect Matthew Knies and a first-round pick.
But Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas reportedly backed off because of his confidence in young goalies Joseph Woll and Erik Kallgren. Kallgren picked up his first career shutout win last week against the Dallas Stars.
The Leafs also believe that Jack Campbell will be able to find his feet by the end of the season.
In any case, discussions would have remained preliminary, as the Blackhawks did not consult Fleury to ask him to waive his no-trade clause for a future move to Toronto.
Is this just a rematch for the Maple Leafs and Marc-Andre Fleury?
It's possible, because we know that many teams are looking for an experienced goaltender for the playoffs and the chances of Fleury being traded are quite good.
