When Vincent Lecavalier joined the Canadiens' staff a year ago now, on March 17, 2022, many thought it was a country club decision. Indeed, the tasks of the former number 4 of the Lightning were not very clear and some saw here the opportunity for Lecavalier to receive a paycheck.
A recent article by Marc Antoine Godin for The Athletic, however, proves that Lecavalier's contribution to the CH is greater than one might think. The latter is essentially focused on amateur video recruiting, and he seems to take his role very seriously.
In this regard, his former teammate and current head coach, Martin St-Louis, told Godin a great anecdote that proves it all.
Can I say something about that?" said St. Louis. Last year, Vinny and I were sitting at the draft table, at the draft, and I'm not really involved with the top prospects. But I was impressed with how ready this guy was, because when they announced the picks, he knew exactly the player and he'd say 'ugh, what a terrible pick' or 'this is a great pick'."
"He had done his homework, I was pretty impressed." - Martin St. Louis
Lecavalier's next few weeks are going to be busy, to say the least. With the 2023 draft fast approaching, he'll be traveling to Switzerland with the rest of the amateur scouting team and team staff for the Under-18 World Championships. The former Lightning standout is also making time to help St. Louis. He watches all CH games and often has conversations with the head coach about certain players.
The idea for Vinny is, much like St. Louis did, to wait until his kids are older before taking on a bigger role in the organization. The experience he is currently gaining with his duties will surely help him in this regard!
