It's a very interesting rumor that has been making a lot of noise on social networks for the past few days, when we learned that the Canadians are seriously interested in Washington Capitals goalie Ilya Samsonov.

These speculations possibly sending Ilya Samsonov to Montreal have even made their way to Washington.

Washington Hockey Now reporter Sammii Silber has revealed some very interesting new information.

The Washington Capitals are looking to acquire a player like Artturi Lekhonen (who has the value of a first-round pick, according to many) and they also want a veteran goalie, like Marc-André Fleury or Jake Allen.

We do indeed understand that Washington is exploring the possibility of «breaking up» its duo of two very young goalkeepers (Samsonov and Vitek Vanecek). They would rather keep one of the two young goalkeepers, and add a veteran.

SEVERAL ITEMS WOULD BE ON THE TABLE

Several other elements would be on the table for a potential trade between Montreal and Washington.

In particular, there would be Samsonov, but also, the other young goalie of the Caps, Vitek Vanecek, the defender Michal Kempny and also, the first round pick of the Capitals.

There is therefore a real potential for a trade between the two teams, depending on the degree of interest of the Caps towards Lehkonen. Goaltender Vanecek looks more attainable, even though he's having a better season, but Hughes and Gorton are targeting Samsonov for a reason, so it'll be interesting to watch.

Lehkonen, 26, has amassed 20 points in 47 games this season with the Habs despite his rare top-6 appearances. He is the team's second leading scorer, excluding Tyler Toffoli.

He earns $2.3 million per season and will be a restricted free agent this summer.
