As we reported yesterday, the discussions between the Pittsburgh Penguins and their two star players, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang, would not go very well. It seems that Ron Hextall is aiming for a 3-year contract for Malkin (to follow Crosby) and that negotiations with Letang are at a standstill, so much so that Elliotte Friedman would not be surprised to see him leave the Steel City this summer.
A new piece of information confirms this, to say the least. Reporter Rob Rossi, who follows the Penguins, revealed Monday that Malkin and Letang had low ball offers, three years and $5 million per season for each. In addition to being ridiculous, the offers reportedly even angered team captain Sidney Crosby...
The captain's reaction is understandable when you consider, one, the contribution that both men have made to the franchise since their arrival, and two, that they will certainly be able to get a lot more on the free agent market this summer. One has to wonder if Ron Hextall doesn't want to push the two veterans out of the organization by themselves in order not to take the blame for doing it himself.
