It's been all over the news in the last few days, as the Montreal Canadiens players were immediately tested pretty hard on their first day on ice at the 2022 training camp.
On Thursday, Martin St-Louis was quick to show his colors, he was inspired by his former head coach John Tortorella, and he had his players skating hard.
He tested their stamina right off the bat, and the players worked very hard.
On this subject, columnist, and former CH goalie coach, Stephane Waite, criticized the whole thing on 98.5 FM.
A two-part critique (one positive and one more negative):
"Coach Martin St-Louis has set the tone for the @CanadiensMTL camp with intensive training. Is there an injury risk? Stephane Waite thinks so: "Martin is starting stiff. He's discussing it with @LangloisMario."
Waite explains:
"It has good and bad sides. I watched a lot of the footage from today and my first impression was, wow! It starts out stiff. What's good is that he wants to instill right away the tone for the season and his authority: this year we're going to work hard. There's not going to be any free rides, it's going to be this, it's going to be that. That, I don't hate that side of it."
"The side that is dangerous is the old school methods. You saw that a lot in my early days in the National League with a guy like Brian Sutter. The problem with that is that it can be very dangerous for injuries. Tomorrow, there's going to be a lot of guys who are going to be very stiff."
He continues:
"In the last 10 years or so, I've never seen a training camp start the same way. All the coaches take it easy to start camp. Step by step. Little by little, you build up the intensity. It's been proven that starting hard, like today, is very dangerous for strains, and especially, groin injuries."
So Stephane Waite does not seem to agree with the method (or approach) of Martin St. Louis, to start the camp, and he expressed his concerns.
And you, what do you say?
