The general manager of the Philadelphia Flyers recently delivered a media availability following Sean Couturier's contract extension. One of the things he talked about was their captain Claude Giroux, who could become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the current season.
According to Chuck Fletcher, Giroux has no intention of signing a contract extension during the season. Negotiations will inevitably get underway at the end of the 2021-2022 season.
"I've had good conversations with Claude and with Pat Brisson, his agent, and at this point our plan is to play the entire season and we'll talk at the end of the season," Fletcher said.
"We're both comfortable with that idea. Claude is our captain, he's a great player and I think we'll find a way to continue that relationship. But right now, I think what we're going to do is go through the season and look at the situation and see where he's at, see where we're at and we'll do what's best for everybody."
The Flyers have recently added some big pieces to their core of players, including Ryan Ellis and Cam Atkinson. They will be looking to make a return to the playoffs after missing them last year. On paper, they are a very big threat to other teams, which must motivate Giroux, who has yet to win a Stanley Cup.
Could he be tempted to leave the Flyers? Obviously, it's an unlikely scenario, but realistic, especially if Alain Vigneault's team has another early exit... Moreover, the big contracts are starting to pile up in Philly.
Will there be any money left for the Hearst, Ontario native? To be continued...
