We witnessed a major twist in the situation for the Montreal Canadiens and general manager Kent Hughes.

As reported by the excellent Marc-Olivier Cook of DansLesCoulisses, the serious injury suffered by defenseman Kaiden Guhle changes a lot of things.

Obviously, this will impact the team's success, it will have a major effect on Martin St-Louis, but it will also significantly affect Kent Hughes.

Kaiden Guhle's Injury: The Canadiens Can No Longer Trade David Savard.

A Twist in a Potential Trade Involving David Savard?

Indeed, knowing that Guhle will likely not play again this season, it becomes almost impossible for general manager Hughes to trade a defenseman like David Savard, especially in the middle of a playoff race.

Yet, he currently has a golden opportunity to do so.

The Dallas Stars, who were already interested in Savard, have just lost Miro Heiskanen for several weeks.

This is a team that would likely have paid a very high price to acquire a player like David Savard at this moment, but Kent Hughes probably can no longer afford to make that move.

«The veteran [Savard] should play big minutes until Guhle returns (if he is able to come back this season), and this makes it clear that right now.. the Canadiens no longer have the luxury of thinking about trading Savard.

That idea needs to be scrapped for now. Because there's no chance the Habs can move forward without both Savard AND Guhle in the lineup..» - Marc-Olivier Cook

Very well said.

This certainly takes options off the table for Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton as the trade deadline approaches.

Good thing we have Alexandre Carrier!

Miro Heiskanen's injury created a perfect opportunity for the Canadiens to trade Savard at a very high price, but the injury to Kaiden Guhle has now nullified that opportunity.

This will still be a fascinating situation to follow.

Would you still trade David Savard for the 28th overall pick in 2025 despite Kaiden Guhle's injury?
