With all this, even though he has less than 150 games of experience in the league, Martin St-Louis has become the head coach with the ninth longest tenure (active) across the NHL. It shows that things change quickly in this league and that a coach who surpasses two years of service becomes by default at risk.
On this matter, the sports betting site SportsBetting has updated its bets regarding the next coach to be fired in the NHL. We find, curiously, at the 6th rank of this list the name of Martin St-Louis...
I say curiously because MSL's situation is quite different from that of other coaches in the league. He has a sort of immunity due to the team's status. Indeed, the CH is currently in a rebuilding period, and the need to win is not currently the same as for other teams in the league.
It is therefore surprising that the site placed the Habs coach in the 6th rank of this bet, well ahead of Sheldon Keefe of the Leafs, who, in my opinion, has much more to lose this season!
The heat will start for St-Louis when Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton announce their intention to make the playoffs. That's when the real countdown will begin, and we'll see how the coach manages under pressure. However, this moment is unlikely to come anytime soon, as it would be surprising if the team's management would mention the famous word in P during the next golf tournament.
The real test for MSL will therefore begin, in my opinion, at the start of the 2025-2026 season. By then, it's certain that several coaches will have already lost their positions across the list, so perhaps even Sheldon Keefe...
