The Canadiens have just announced the signing of defenseman Gustav Lindstrom.

He's back! Just hours before the first game of the 2024-2025 regular season, Kent Hughes makes a move and announces the signing of a very reliable depth defenseman.

As all hockey experts and executives say, you can never have enough good depth defensemen. (especially reliable ones)

Gustav Lindstrom Signs with the Montreal Canadiens

Here is an excerpt from Kent Hughes' official statement.

«Canadiens General Manager Kent Hughes announced Wednesday that the team has agreed to terms on a one-year, two-way contract with defenseman Gustav Lindström.»

And here is the full announcement:

Gustav Lindstrom, 25 years old, is a right-handed defenseman standing at 6 feet 2 inches and weighing 194 pounds.

He was a 2nd-round pick (38th overall) by the Detroit Red Wings in 2017, and he will now compete with Logan Mailloux and Justin Barron in the Canadiens' depth chart.

He has played 174 career NHL games (35 points and 80 penalty minutes), including 14 games with Martin St. Louis' squad last season.

Clearly, the Habs' management really likes him.

Personnel Moves

Subsequently, the Montreal Canadiens immediately announced that they have placed Lindstrom on NHL waivers.

If he clears, he will join the Laval Rocket and add solid stability for Pascal Vincent's team.

Lindstrom was acquired by Kent Hughes via trade in August 2023, in the Jeff Petry deal with the Detroit Red Wings. He was later claimed off waivers by the Anaheim Ducks in January 2024. (32 games played with Anaheim)

Gustav Lindstrom, newly signed by the Canadiens, adds some depth to the right side of the defense following the loss of David Reinbacher.

He also gives Logan Mailloux a bit more competition, as Mailloux was the first to be called up in case of an injury on defense.

Welcome back to Montreal, Gustav!

Also, regarding personnel moves made by the management today, we note the paper transactions of Arber Xhekaj and Jayden Struble to the Laval Rocket, but don't worry, both players remain in Montreal. (these are just paper moves)

Details to follow.
