We just heard an interesting statement on BPM Sports regarding Samuel Montembeault and Cayden Primeau.

According to former Montreal Canadiens player and current host Georges Laraque, management's plan was never to have a tandem of Montembeault and Primeau this season. Wow.

So, it seems another goaltender was clearly in the plans.

Was it Yaroslav Askarov? Or perhaps another goaltender who is still available, like John Gibson?

It's hard to say, but Laraque is convinced that Samuel Montembeault and Cayden Primeau were not the intended plan for the Canadiens this season.

Georges Laraque claims that, in the Canadiens' minds, their tandem for this year was not meant to be Samuel Montembeault and Cayden Primeau

Here's the excerpt in question:

«The Canadiens made a mistake (by trading Jake Allen for a 3rd-round pick). We'd take him back today to make a duo with Samuel Montembeault. It's easy to say in hindsight.

But the thing is, when they had three goalies and the Montreal Canadiens didn't want to lose Primeau (on waivers), as we all know, they traded Jake Allen.

The mistake, though, is that if you're going to do that, you had to ensure you had a tandem for this season, and I'm sure that in the Canadiens' minds, their tandem for this year wasn't Primeau and Montembeault.

You can't expect to be in the mix with Primeau and Montembeault in net.»

- Georges Laraque

This is really interesting.

If Laraque is correct, we might eventually see a new goaltender between the pipes for the Montreal Canadiens.

It could come from within or from outside.

Personally, I trust Samuel Montembeault, but I have to admit Cayden Primeau's inconsistency worries me quite a bit.

After all , Hughes confirmed he tried acquiring Marc-Andre Fleury this summer:

Also, Eliotte Friedman confirmed the Canadiens were in on the Yaroslav Askarov trade but ended up losing the derby:
