With Cayden Primeau as his backup, the Quebecer will have to do everything to show everyone that he can lead an NHL team.
While both had an excellent training camp, at least for now, it doesn't stop many from doubting the long-term effectiveness of the tandem.
On this topic, Darren Dreger recently stated on TSN 690 that many of his colleagues across the NHL are uncertain whether the two goaltenders will get the job done.
Some even believe that Kent Hughes should make a move in this regard.
For his part, Dreger doesn't share the same level of concern. Unlike his colleagues, he doesn't believe the goaltending tandem will be a significant issue for the team. There are indeed some questions, but it may not be as dramatic as many think.
There are still many aspects to determine with both goalies, but especially concerning Montembeault. He will need to prove that he can win meaningful games and lead his team to the playoffs. That's when we'll truly see who Monty is.
In Dreger's eyes, there's nothing suggesting that the Canadiens' number one goalie won't be able to prove all of this. So, there's no need to panic for now.
We also shouldn't forget that the team has another year of experience, and the defense will be more polished. It will then be up to Monty to keep his position and not crumble under pressure. Many, however, foresee Primeau taking over as number one sooner rather than later this season...
To be continued.
Personally, I have great confidence in our Samuel Montembeault especially after his stellar performance in game one against the Maple Leafs.
