While Montreal Canadiens fans are already eager to see forward Patrik Laine back in uniform, the wait could be a long one.

TVA Sports journalist Nicolas Cloutier did a fantastic job of sharing the analysis of Dr. Harjas Grewal, who suggests that the most likely scenario for Laine is a medial collateral ligament injury in his knee.

If confirmed, this would mean a long absence and significant rehabilitation for Laine.

Dr. Harjas Grewal anticipates a lengthy absence for Patrik Laine

Here's an excerpt from his article:

«In a message exchange with TVASports.ca, Dr. Grewal indicated, based solely on available footage and not on more in-depth medical examinations, that a medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury to the knee seems to be the most likely scenario.»

- From an article by Nicolas Cloutier

He mentions a nearly 100% probability concerning the medial collateral ligament (MCL), but he also adds that there's about a 50% chance that the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) could also be affected.

This would be literally the worst-case scenario, but it wouldn't be entirely surprising based on the circulating footage (the collision images).

«If surgery is required, I would expect Laine to be back to full health in time for the start of the next season.» - Dr. Grewal, who adds that Laine's performance would likely be negatively impacted, even after his return to play.

We would have preferred to share better news with you, but for now, this is what's being reported.

We highly recommend reading Nicolas Cloutier's full article on TVA Sports.

That said, we are still awaiting official news from the Canadiens.
