Among the players who could interest the Canadiens during the opening of the free-agent market next summer is Mathieu Olivier of the Blue Jackets.

The rugged Quebecois forward is in the final year of his contract this season, and according to Renaud Lavoie, there doesn't seem to be an imminent agreement between the Columbus Blue Jackets and Olivier.

Mathieu Olivier: Still an Option for Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens

This is what Lavoie stated during his appearance on the show JiC on TVA Sports. For the journalist, this represents good news for the Canadiens organization.

«This is music to my ears because we want him in Montreal.»

- Renaud Lavoie

Lavoie also mentioned that Olivier could likely expect a four or five-year deal earning him $2.75 or $3 million annually.

He is currently having the best season of his career, with 15 points, including 9 goals, in 37 games.

Given his rather rugged playing style, it's highly likely that some teams will show interest in him as the trade deadline approaches if negotiations between him and the Blue Jackets don't come to fruition by then.

If Olivier decides to test free agency, it's very possible that his former agent, one Kent Hughes, will give him a call to discuss his interest in joining the Montreal Canadiens.

Moreover, we know the Canadiens will free up cap space for the upcoming season, and perhaps there will be room for him on the roster.

If it were your decision, would you offer $3 million annually to acquire Mathieu Olivier?
