Marc Bergevin took a big risk by not protecting his star goalie Carey Price... unless it was Price who demanded Bergevin not protect him, indicating that he wanted a change of scenery.
You never know! That said, with the $11 million bonus that will have to be deposited to Carey Price in the near future, his cap hit of $10.5 million, the five years left on his contract and a possible hip injury, Berg most likely believed that his "adopted son" would not be selected. Except that it all seems to be working against him...
In light of the rumors circulating right now, the chances of Price actually leaving the Blue-White-Red organization may be higher than 50%. What if that percentage is now 60%? We're talking here, but the owners of the Seattle Kraken, who have very deep pockets, want to bring the number 31 to their club. Price is still quite a marketing product, so tickets and merchandise would certainly sell a lot with him in the club's ranks (a bit like Marc-Andre Fleury in Vegas).
Here is what journalist Greg Wyshynski of the ESPN network delivered regarding Carey Price:
"I know for a fact that the owners want him. They are infatuated with the idea of seeing Price's name behind the Kraken jerseys they will start selling tomorrow night. The people I've talked to say that there is some sort of church and state separation between the owners and the field hockey department. I think they [the Kraken] are going to select Price. Don't forget how attached Ron Francis was to having a veteran behind the net like Cam Ward in Carolina!"
So, after reading this, has the percentage of Price leaving Montreal increased in your mind? Based on the information gathered by Wyshynski, a veteran journalist, it seems likely that Jake Allen will become the new number one goaltender for the Montreal Canadiens.
