The general manager of the Montreal Canadiens, Kent Hughes, is reportedly about to make a move thanks to the Carolina Hurricanes.
We talked about it in the past few hours, but with the reported signing of Evgeny Kuznetsov with SKA Saint Petersburg for four seasons, this possibly pushes Demidov out of the starting lineup there.
The reason is simple.
SKA already has 8 established forwards they want to keep long-term, and now they are adding Kuznetsov to that.
They obviously won't want to remove one of «their» players from the lineup to prioritize Demidov, who will leave them in a year.
«Thus, Demidov, the Montreal Canadiens' prospect, finds himself far down the hierarchy of the powerful KHL club. According to EliteProspects, he would be the 17th forward with a contract in Saint Petersburg and, by far, the youngest.» - TVA Sports
And seeing Demidov play in the VHL or MHL would really not be optimal for his development.
The Hurricanes let Evgeny Kuznetsov go: Is Kent Hughes going to make a move to bring Ivan Demidov to North America?
This is a serious possibility for the 5th overall pick of the Canadiens, just as the Philadelphia Flyers recently did with Matvei Michkov.
«Could the Canadiens be tempted to intervene in this matter to favor the learning and progression of Demidov during his last year of contract in Russia? Negotiating to have his contract in Russia broken is one of the possibilities open to general manager Kent Hughes.» - TVA Sports
So this will be a big issue to watch until October.
Whatever Kent Hughes does, wherever Demidov plays in 2023-24, let's just hope it's the best possible place for his development.
Demidov is a special player with special talent, so we need to take care of him and ensure he is developed in the best way possible.
This is so crucial for the future of the Montreal Canadiens.
