The news we've been waiting for just dropped concerning forward Evgeny Kuznetsov, and it will obviously have a major impact on the Montreal Canadiens.
As we reported to you yesterday, Evgeny Kuznetsov was placed on NHL waivers by the Carolina Hurricanes, and we hoped he would not be claimed.
Why? Because his goal is to sign in the KHL, join SKA Saint Petersburg, and possibly take Ivan Demidov's spot on the roster there.
Evgeny Kuznetsov in the KHL, Ivan Demidov in the NHL?
The general manager of the Montreal Canadiens, Kent Hughes, has openly mentioned that if Ivan Demidov doesn't play in the KHL next season, he will evaluate his options (possibly including bringing him to North America right now).
In short, the verdict has just come in for Kuznetsov!
"Evgeny Kuznetsov was ignored on unconditional waivers.
He is now an unrestricted free agent and can sign wherever he wants."
- Elliotte Friedman
So, he is officially likely to sign with SKA!
This makes the Ivan Demidov situation very interesting for Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens.
It could change everything, and don't be surprised if, against all odds, Demidov arrives in Montreal much sooner than expected.
Details will follow.
Kuznetsov, 32 years old, was the 26th overall pick by the Washington Capitals in 2010 (1st round) and has amassed 575 points in 743 career NHL games.
We wish him the best of luck in the rest of his career, and we look forward to seeing what impacts this change will have on Ivan Demidov and the Canadiens.
