New Stat Reveals Why Cayden Primeau May No Longer Belong in the NHL
Things aren't going smoothly for Cayden Primeau since the start of the season.
After having some solid performances in 2023-2024, this season has been much more challenging for him, and his statistics have been rather catastrophic so far.
A seventh-round pick by the Canadiens in 2017, Primeau has been slow to establish himself as a respectable NHL goaltender, and a reputable journalist has made points supporting this argument.
A Very Difficult Start to the Season for Cayden Primeau
In fact, according to Marc-Antoine Godin of Radio-Canada, the Canadiens goaltender's stats are so poor this season that a demotion to the Laval Rocket is more than plausible.
Using the NHL's average save percentage, this statistic shows how many more or fewer goals a goalie allows compared to the average of his peers.
Even though he has only played in 10 games this season, Primeau ranks dead last among NHL goalies in this regard.
And by far.
Another metric is GSAx, which stands for goals saved above expectations. It's another statistic that accumulates data, the more you play, the more your result changes.
In terms of goals saved above expectations, Primeau's differential of -6.57 is among the worst in the league.»

Both young goalies in the Canadiens organization are having excellent seasons with the Laval Rocket, and it's very possible that Kent Hughes will have a decision to make soon regarding Cayden Primeau.
In 10 games this season, the American netminder has only secured two wins and has posted a goals-against average of 4.45, which is far from worthy of an NHL goalie in today's game.
Obviously, this assumes that Jakub Dobes will be healthy and ready to play when the time comes to make this change, which seems inevitable.
