Mike Matheson is one of those names likely to draw interest elsewhere in the NHL (and someone Kent Hughes could consider trading).
My opinion on this matter is quite simple: it all depends on the price.
Recently, the excellent Marc-Olivier Beaudoin speculated on a concrete return.
Once again, in my humble opinion, it all depends on who the decent prospect is.
Personally, I wouldn't trade Matheson simply for a 26th overall pick (from a contending team) and an average prospect.
At that point, I'd keep him.
To convince me to trade Matheson, and to convince me it would be a good decision for the Montreal Canadiens, it would take a top-15 pick and/or a young player I highly believe in.
Knowing that the Dallas Stars have interest, I immediately think of a young player like Mavrik Bourque.
The Stars do indeed have hometown forward Mavrik Bourque in their ranks, who collected 77 points in 71 games last season in the American Hockey League.
Marc-Olivier Beaudoin knows his stuff very well, so we can consider this a completely realistic return for Matheson, based on the two elements mentioned here.
A situation to watch in the coming weeks, much like the one involving David Savard, for that matter.
A lot of work ahead for Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton..
