For many years, Julien Brisebois has been considered one of the best GMs in the league.
However, his aura seems to be diminishing, with some even thinking he should be replaced.
In recent weeks, the Quebecois at the helm of the Tampa Bay Lightning has drastically changed the image of his team. He let go of «Mr. Lightning» Steven Stamkos and traded defenseman Mikhail Sergachev. All of this to replace them with Jake Guentzel and Ryan McDonagh/J.J. Moser
Shocking twist and potential firing for Tampa Bay Lightning GM Julien BriseBois?
For the reasons mentioned above, The Hockey News columnist Adam Proteau believes it might be time to start thinking about replacing the GM. Without firing him immediately, Proteau thinks that if nothing changes in Tampa soon, BriseBois could be in hot water.
«Time is running out for this core of Lightning talent, and BriseBois must find a way to make his team thrive. If he doesn't succeed, it might be time to make a change at the top of the power pyramid in Tampa.» - Adam Proteau
The pressure will be high in Florida for the Quebecois in the coming months. He will have to hope that the changes he made to his team will be beneficial and that the team will quickly find success, especially after completely disregarding their captain.
On the other hand, the excellent Frank Seravalli stated in the latest episode of the DFO Rundown podcast that the GM made a monumental mistake by letting Stamkos go. According to the reputable insider, the former Bolts captain still had good hockey left in him and was the face of the organization.
DFO Rundown - Recapping a wild week of offseason moves
«It's a giant miscalculation by Julien Brisebois.
«Make no mistake, I don't believe teams should let emotions take over during negotiations. But I find it hard to believe that a player who just scored over 40 goals and 80 points last season can't help your team. [] I truly believe that if the Lightning had offered him three years at six million dollars per year, he would have taken it. The Lightning's offer wasn't even close.»
Frank Seravalli
One can only hope for Brisebois that he knows what he's doing and that he won't make further bad decisions to correct past ones.
