Something no one saw coming, a bit like the acquisition of Sean Monahan two years ago.
Without revisiting what has become a true stroke of genius by the Canadiens' general manager, we can imagine that the organization is exploring its options for the upcoming season, and similar to the Monahan acquisition, Hughes could very well repeat the feat in the coming weeks.
According to the website DansLesCoulisses, there are only two players left to sign for the next season, Justin Barron and Arber Xhekaj, and after these signings, the Canadiens should have about 17 million dollars left under the salary cap, of course, after placing Carey Price on the long-term injured reserve list.
That said, it might be the right time for Kent Hughes to be active and take on a «bad contract,» similar to what he did with Sean Monahan in the summer of 2022.
The first name that comes to mind is Patrik Laine, who has been talked about for quite some time now, but players like Jonathan Huberdeau, Tyler Seguin, and Alex Killorn are also considered to have bad contracts and could be a short-term solution for the Canadiens' top 6 forwards.
I'm not saying here that any of these players will be traded to the Canadiens soon, but as you know with Kent Hughes, you can never rule out a surprise, and it will be interesting to follow the evolution of the search for the missing top 6 forward in Martin St-Louis' lineup.
