The Maple Leafs officially strip John Tavares of captaincy and name new captain
The Toronto Maple Leafs have just made a big decision regarding John Tavares and Auston Matthews.
They have called a last-minute press conference to announce that they are stripping the "Captain" title from John Tavares and giving it to Auston Matthews. Wow.
Auston Matthews to Become the New Captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Replacing John Tavares
See what Darren Dreger reports.
"The Toronto Maple Leafs are expected to name Auston Matthews as captain on Wednesday. This is part of Matthews' evolution as a leader, and the current Maple Leafs captain, John Tavares, fully supports this change.
Tavares was heavily involved in the process with General Manager Brad Treliving."
- Darren Dreger
Chris Johnston's (TSN) sources have also confirmed the news.
For the occasion, the Maple Leafs organization has indeed called the journalists for an important press conference.
"The Leafs have scheduled a press conference at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, where they will officially unveil Auston Matthews as the 26th captain in the franchise's history."
- Chris Johnston, TSN
Is this the big change that the Maple Leafs' General Manager promised? Do you think it's a good decision?
In any case, it feels like the end for Tavares in Toronto, as his contract expires at the end of the next season.
Details will follow.
