Washington Capitals forward Pierre-Luc Dubois, traded by the Los Angeles Kings last June, has made a notable statement.

Previously linked to the Montreal Canadiens on multiple occasions, Dubois eventually signed a massive 8-year, $68 million contract with the Kings. Now, he has offered an explanation for his lack of success in Los Angeles.

Let's recall that the Kings practically gave him to the Capitals less than a year after signing him long-term, indicating that they had already grown tired of him.

The new Capitals forward explained what he believes went wrong during his time in the City of Angels.

He seems to almost blame the team's system and his relationship with head coach Todd McLellan.

"Take it as you will, but I've always needed clear direction to work at 100%.

I get confused when there are grey areas. I start questioning everything. It's something I've been working on since I was young. And from my first conversations with the team, I didn't really know what was expected of me. I didn't know where I stood. You can't perform well when you're constantly second-guessing yourself."

He added that he didn't talk to Todd McLellan very often, while also providing some clarification and accepting part of the blame.

"We didn't talk much," Dubois said of Kings head coach Todd McLellan. "Todd is more of a team tactician. Maybe we didn't have that kind of relationship. Maybe I was too demanding, wanting to be told the path forward. It's clearly my fault that it didn't work out."

Dubois added that he tried to take on the challenge, but remained stuck in this grey area throughout the year and simply didn't feel comfortable.

It will be interesting to see if Dubois can bounce back with the Washington Capitals, as his talent is clearly not in question.
