We don't hope for it, but the 2023-24 season could once again be difficult.
That's why General Manager Kent Hughes is preparing more to be competitive for the following season, the 2024-25 season, especially since next summer he will have a lot of space under the NHL salary cap to try for some big hits.
He can attempt to sign a star player in the free agent market, especially as several big names will be free as air.
In short, in this perspective, a trade proposal involving the Canadiens and the Capitals has just surfaced and would be really logical for the current plan.
As you know, the Washington Capitals are trying to get rid of Anthony Mantha's contract, but in an era where every dollar counts, they have not yet found a taker.
Here is the trade suggestion from the excellent Blain Potvin, from The Hockey Writers:
A one-for-one trade.
This makes sense because the Habs have room to welcome Mantha, give him a season to prove himself, and his contract conveniently ends next summer.
The Canadiens therefore assume Mantha's $5.7 million for a single season, while the Capitals make some very valuable room on their salary cap. (Armia earns $3.4M for two more years)
This is exactly the kind of transaction Kent Hughes would make, in our opinion.
In the end, Kent Hughes ensures to free at least, $3.4 precious million for the summer and the next season.
As for the Caps, they need space now.
If you were the GM of the Habs, would you accept this offer?
