As the start of the Montreal Canadiens' training camp rapidly approaches, Kent Hughes still has one matter to settle, following the three-team trade concluded with the Pittsburgh Penguins and the San Jose Sharks.

Jeff Petry was traded to the Detroit Red Wings, which resolved one issue, but there's still the matter of the goaltenders. There are too many at the moment.

It seems Cayden Primeau will be placed on waivers, Samuel Montembeault has secured his spot, and Jake Allen has also reportedly been told he won't be traded anytime soon.

So, that leaves Casey DeSmith, who is waiting for his fate.

All indications point to him being the one who will be traded, and we've just learned some very interesting new information on this subject.

"That said, according to what Jonathan Bernier (Journal de Montréal) reports, it appears that the Canadiens were unable to trade DeSmith in a deal that was supposed to be finalized in the days following the Jeff Petry trade with the Red Wings." - Charles-Alexis Brisebois

Interesting! This seems to confirm the rumor that DeSmith will indeed be the one traded, and that Kent Hughes is trying to finalize such a trade.

Why was the DeSmith trade never completed in the days following the Jeff Petry deal? To be continued.
