Official announcement:

BROSSARD - Montreal Canadiens general manager, Kent Hughes, announced on Tuesday a trade sending defenseman Jeff Petry to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for defenseman Gustav Lindström and a conditional fourth-round pick in 2025. The Canadiens retain 50% of Petry's remaining salary.

The fourth-round pick in 2025 will be the later of Detroit or Boston's pick.

Lindström, 24, registered eight points (one goal, seven assists) in 36 games with Detroit last season. In four seasons in the NHL, the 6-foot-2, 183 lb right-handed blue-liner appeared in 128 regular season games with the Red Wings, tallying two goals and 23 assists. The Östervla, SE native was drafted in the second round (38th overall) by the Red Wings in 2017.

Petry was acquired from the Penguins along with goalie Casey DeSmith, forward Nathan Legare and a second-round pick in 2025 for forwards Mike Hoffman and Rem Pitlick on August 6. Pittsburgh retained 25% of Petry's salary in the original transaction.

Julie and Jeff Petry will therefore be very happy to return home to Michigan. It's the dream scenario for them.

Lindstrom, 24 years old, is a right-handed defenseman standing at 6 feet 2 inches and weighing 183 pounds. He was drafted 38th overall (2nd round) in 2017 by the Detroit Red Wings.

He has accumulated 25 points in 128 career NHL games. Last season, he played 36 games with the Red Wings and collected 8 points. He is described as a reliable defenseman, solid in his own zone, but not very offensive.
