Many of us think that he will not start the season with the Habs and that he will be traded by then.
However, journalist and former CH employee, Marc Dumont, has just made a surprising statement.
According to him, trading David Savard (rather than Petry) would make more sense for Kent Hughes. Wow.
At the present time, here are the likely defensive pairs to start the 2023-24 season:
Matheson-Savard
Guhle-Petry
Harris-Barron
Johnathan Kovacevic, Chris Wideman, Arber Xhekaj, Jordan Harris, and Justin Barron would be competing for the last spots in the lineup.
The departure of Petry (or Savard in this case) would create an additional spot for the names mentioned above, which would be a good thing.
It might also allow Chris Wideman or Johnathan Kovacevic to avoid waivers.
**Note that Xhekaj, Harris, Guhle, and Barron can all return to Laval without being exposed to waivers.
In short, let's get back to Marc Dumont.
He indeed thinks that it would make more sense to trade David Savard rather than Jeff Petry. It's up to you to judge whether you agree with him or not.
The former CH employee didn't explain his opinion much, but he mentioned this:
Personally, we don't necessarily agree with this.
Savard is a solid role model for the young players; both (Petry and Savard) will be free as the wind in two years, but Petry costs 1.2 million dollars more on the salary cap.
If Savard could fetch much more than Petry in a trade, we might agree with him, but now, he wouldn't necessarily fetch more than Petry, and even Dumont says so.
And you, which one would you trade first?
