It will soon be a year to the day that Kent Hughes completed one of his best transactions as general manager.

On August 18, 2022, he acquired Sean Monahan and a conditional 1st round pick in 2025, for simple future considerations.

New information is surfacing about this trade between the Montreal Canadiens and the Calgary Flames in August

According to the very reliable Ali Murji, another trade was discussed between Kent Hughes and his Alberta counterpart.

"From my understanding the original deal with Montreal was supposed to be Monahan, a 1st and an extra piece for Josh Anderson, but Nazem Kadri decided to become a Flame so it ended up being a cap dump."

In short, a year ago, the following trade would have been seriously discussed between the Flames and the Canadiens:

Sean Monahan, a first round pick and another piece, in exchange for Josh Anderson.

In the end, the Flames preferred to let go of Anderson and simply sign Kadri via the free-agent market. That resulted in the trade we know today and which is a real home run.

Interesting.

Kadri, 32, signed a contract for $7 million per season, valid until 2029. He racked up 56 points (24 goals) with the Flames in 2022-23.
