Unexpected new development regarding Jeff Petry's trade to the Red Wings
As we reported to you in the last few minutes, the Montreal Canadiens have just completed a trade with the Detroit Red Wings.
Defenseman Jeff Petry is heading home, in exchange for the young Gustav Lindstrom and a conditional 4th round pick in 2025.
For now, the fans seem really disappointed with the return, especially since some experts were predicting much more.
In short, there's more.
Not only are the CH trading Petry, but moreover, Kent Hughes has agreed to retain 50% of the remaining salary of the defenseman in the transaction.
The Montreal Canadiens are retaining 50% of Jeff Petry's salary.

This therefore reduces the Habs' payroll by $2,343,750 for the next two seasons, which is really not ideal.
It's surprising that Kent Hughes agreed to this.
