This is a proposal from the excellent analyst Marc-Olivier Beaudoin.
Since the start of the offseason, big names have been linked to the Canadiens and major trades have been suggested. We can think of Martin Necas, Trevor Zegras, Kent Johnson, Patrik Laine, and company.
However, this one is more subtle, much more affordable, but could yield significant returns.
Oliver Wahlsrtom was the 11th overall pick in 2018 (1st round) and is only 24 years old. His potential is very interesting.
Clearly, things are not working out for him with the New York Islanders, but he could greatly benefit from a fresh start.
Could he be an interesting project for Kent Hughes and Martin St-Louis? Marc-Olivier Beaudoin seems to think so.
Of these three elements, I would prioritize the 3rd round draft pick. I don't think I would give up Oliver Kapanen or Adam Engstrom for Wahlstrom.
Wahlstrom, 6 feet 2 inches and 200 pounds, has amassed 67 points (34 goals) in 193 NHL games and has often been compared to a certain Patrik Laine in the past.
Knowing that he will earn less than a million dollars per year and is likely to cost just a 2nd or 3rd round draft pick (via trade), would you make this trade?
He could be an interesting project «like Alex Newhook.»
If it works out, it could be a home run for Kent Hughes, and if it doesn't work out, it won't have cost much.
I am quite convinced that Lou Lamoriello would accept a 3rd round pick for Wahlstrom, especially considering that this pick will be high in the third round. Stay tuned.
