A trade completed by Bergevin will really hurt at this summer draft

As the 2024 NHL draft approaches, note that a trade by Marc Bergevin still hurts the Montreal Canadiens.

The transaction completed between Montreal and Utah for Christian Dvorak still has impacts on the organization.

If we take a look at the picks held by the Habs next June, we notice that Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton have:

- Montreal's 1st round pick
- Winnipeg's 1st round pick
- Colorado's 2nd round pick
- Montreal's 3rd round pick
- Minnesota's 3rd round pick
- Montreal's 4th round pick
- Montreal's 5th round pick
- San Jose's 5th round pick
- Montreal's 6th round pick
- Montreal's 7th round pick
- Edmonton's 7th round pick
- Washington's 7th round pick

It's obviously a very interesting bank, but we also notice that a very important pick is missing.

Kent Hughes still paying for the Christian Dvorak trade

The Canadiens do not have their second-round pick for the 2024 draft, a pick that will be around the 37th overall. (practically a first-round pick)

This is exactly the kind of selection that can be extremely useful to complete a trade like the one for Alex Newhook, or to move up a first-round pick.

For example, Hughes could have traded his #26 and #37 picks for a 15th overall pick, for instance.

Dvorak was indeed acquired by the Tricolore on September 2021, for a 2022 first-round pick and a 2024 second-round pick.

It would have been very interesting ammunition for Kent Hughes, and it's a bad trade by Marc Bergevin that still hurts, but we trust the new Habs bosses to cook up something despite everything in Las Vegas next June.
