In recent days, for logical reasons, many journalists have linked Kent Hughes to Stan Bowman for a "Sean Monahan" type of trade.
As you know, Oilers GM Stan Bowman was targeted by two offer sheets made by the St. Louis Blues to Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg.
Edmonton, therefore, had 7 days to quickly free up cap space under the NHL salary cap to match the offer sheets made to Holloway and Broberg.
They needed to make a trade quickly, and the general manager of the Montreal Canadiens was one of the few in the NHL who could help them (along with the Sharks' GM in San Jose).
We knew that Cody Ceci and Brett Kulak were the two names the Oilers were trying to trade due to their contracts, but we didn't know the asking price.
Some journalists were talking about a 1st-round or 2nd-round pick but clearly, the price ended up being much lower.
Late last night, Oilers traded Cody Ceci and they really didn't pay much.
Moreover, they added Ty Emberson!
We're talking here about a solid NHL third-pairing defenseman "all day long" with excellent skating ability.
In essence, it's as if the Canadiens still had Johnathan Kovacevic, and Kent Hughes had traded Kovacevic for Cody Ceci and a 3rd-round pick.
That would have been a terrible price to take on such a contract.
With a 1st-round pick, it might have been worth taking Cody Ceci's contract, but not at this price.
Rest assured that Kent Hughes called the Edmonton Oilers for a "give me a 1st-round pick and Cody Ceci for future considerations" type of deal, especially since the Oilers were really in trouble, but in the end, we understand why this trade never happened for the Montreal Canadiens.
The San Jose Sharks came to the rescue of the Edmonton Oilers, and they didn't really make them pay much.
