An Edmonton journalist has just sent Justin Barron to the Oilers, even though the defenseman has just signed with the Montreal Canadiens.

It is known that Kent Hughes will inevitably have to make a move, simply because he has too many defensemen.

We're potentially talking about 11 defensemen for 6 or 7 regular spots with the Montreal Canadiens.

This could really make Kent Hughes' job easier if a team shows up and demonstrates a strong interest in a young defenseman whom the GM is comfortable letting go.

It is known that Arber Xhekaj generates a lot of interest in the NHL, but for obvious reasons, he doesn't fall into the category of defensemen "that Kent Hughes is comfortable letting go."

That said, Justin Barron could be.

A trade between the Montreal Canadiens and the Edmonton Oilers involving Justin Barron?

A journalist covering the Oilers, Allan Mitchell, has indeed linked Justin Barron to Connor McDavid's team.

Edmonton needs a right-handed defenseman who isn't too expensive, and Barron is one of the three names targeted by Mitchell.

"Edmonton needs help on the right side of the defense, and Barron is one of the defensemen Stan Bowman might target. Rasmus Andersson and Artem Zub are two other defensemen mentioned by Mitchell."

- Raphaël Simard

Among the names mentioned, Barron is (by far) the most affordable for the Oilers.

According to Mitchell, the development is absolutely worth the risk for Edmonton, and they have assets to trade that could interest Kent Hughes.

"Barron is a long-term acquisition, but his speed and offensive tools make him a reasonable investment for a right-handed defenseman."

- Allan Mitchell

After all, Justin Barron is only 22 years old, earns only $1.15 million per year, and above all, he is a right-handed defenseman who was drafted in the first round in 2020.

That certainly has good value for a team like the Edmonton Oilers, especially with the major contract coming for Leon Draisaitl.

They probably can't afford an Andersson or a Zub, so that leaves Barron.

It is certainly a possibility to keep in mind.
