Montreal Canadiens defenseman, Mike Matheson, is among the 30 players most likely to be traded, according to insider Chris Johnston from The Athletic.

Matheson is ranked 19th and stands out due to his high value, notably thanks to his contract, which extends for another season after this one, and his impressive performance, including a 62-point season last year.

Johnston highlights that Matheson, as an excellent skater, represents a valuable trade asset compared to players like David Savard, Joel Armia, or Christian Dvorak, whose contracts expire at the end of this season.

However, trading Matheson would not be without consequences.

Currently, he is the most utilized player by head coach Martin St-Louis, averaging 24 minutes and 28 seconds of ice time per game.

A trade involving Mike Matheson? Only at the right price

If an attractive offer lands on Kent Hughes' desk, he might consider a trade.

However, losing Matheson would leave a significant gap on the blue line, already lacking in experience, especially given the challenges faced by the team's young defensemen.

Across the NHL, player movement is expected as the trade deadline approaches.

For now, Matheson remains a key asset for Montreal, but the situation could quickly evolve if enticing offers materialize.

This will certainly be a story to watch, particularly if the emergence of young Lane Hutson continues at such an intense and sustained pace.
