As you know, almost exactly two years ago, Kent Hughes came to the rescue of the Calgary Flames' general manager, who needed to quickly free up some money.
This led to the famous Sean Monahan trade (Monahan + a 1st-round pick in exchange for future considerations).
Will the Canadiens' general manager try his luck again, this time with the other team from Alberta?
This is an idea currently circulating.
The Oilers will have a hard time matching these two offers, as we're talking about $6,871,374 per season in salaries, while Edmonton is currently ALREADY OVER the NHL salary cap by nearly $400,000.
This is where Kent Hughes could step in.
The Canadiens' GM has some salary cap space ($5,452,916 with Carey Price, potentially much more) and could assist Stan Bowman.
And this is where Cody Ceci's name has surfaced.
Ceci is a 30-year-old right-handed defenseman who earns $3.25 million per year, with his contract expiring next summer.
Since he's right-handed, he could fill a gap in the Canadiens' defense, but otherwise, just as he did last year with Jeff Petry and Casey DeSmith, Kent Hughes could simply re-trade him.
In any case, I'd be willing to bet a small $2 that Kent Hughes will call the Edmonton Oilers' general manager to offer some help.
If the Oilers are ever ready to trade Cody Ceci + a 1st-round pick to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for future considerations... would you make that trade?
