As you know, the Oilers are in big trouble.
They are already over the NHL salary cap (by $400,000), and now they have 6 days to find a way to match the two offer sheets submitted yesterday by the St. Louis Blues.
These are the two contracts they must match.
Rest assured, Kent Hughes will at least make a quick call to the Oilers' general manager to see if he can take advantage of this situation.
The Canadiens are one of the few teams with the necessary cap space to help the Oilers.
This is exactly what Hughes did in August 2022, in the Sean Monahan trade with the Calgary Flames. (Monahan + a 1st-round pick in exchange for future considerations)
Calgary needed to free up cap space to sign Nazem Kadri.
But what would the cost be?
It appears the Pittsburgh Penguins might have just given us the answer.
Last night, they completed a trade with the Nashville Predators (who were also in trouble with the salary cap) and acquired a contract worth $2.5 million.
What did it cost the Predators to free up $2.5 million?
It cost them 3rd-round and 6th-round draft picks, but the $2.5 million contract in question was also a good bet for the Pittsburgh Penguins, involving young Cody Glass.
To Pittsburgh:
Cody Glass
2025 3rd-round pick
2026 6th-round pick
To Nashville:
An AHL player (Jordan Frasca)
This provides important information for Kent Hughes if he wants to make a similar deal with the Edmonton Oilers.
In Ceci's case, we're talking about a right-handed defenseman who earns $3.25 million for one more season, but who is less appealing to the Canadiens than Cody Glass.
Do you think Kent Hughes should take advantage of the Oilers' troubles, given they only have 6 days to sort everything out?
