The Montreal Canadiens have the next Mikhail Sergachev in their system
In 2023, Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens made an intriguing acquisition on defense.
In the fourth round, with the 110th overall pick, the Habs selected 21-year-old defenseman Bogdan Konyushkov.
Since then, many experts have been excited about his development, particularly because he is achieving extremely rare feats for someone his age in the KHL.
Named captain, invited to the All-Star Game, a regular player in the KHL since he was just 19, 53 points accumulated at only 21 years old, the most utilized player on his team at Torpedo... He really seems to be developing at a rapid pace.
But what does Igor Larionov think of Montreal Canadiens prospect Bogdan Konyushkov?
What does his own head coach think?
Well, he is 100% convinced that Konyushkov has the attributes needed to become an excellent defenseman in the NHL.
Wow.
He even went so far as to mention that Konyushkov could eventually become a Mikhail Sergachev.
This isn't coming from us, it isn't coming from a Montreal Canadiens fan, it's straight from Konyushkov's head coach!
«Bogdan is becoming a solid and reliable player. I don't want to get ahead of myself by giving him too much praise. We often expect progress from young players, but sometimes life throws obstacles in their way.
However, Bogdan is a serious young man, and I believe he has the potential to reach the level of some star players like Mikhail Sergachev, Nikita Kucherov, Artemi Panarin, Kirill Kaprizov, Alex Ovechkin, or Evgeni Malkin, as he dreams of.
I know he has the skills and intelligence needed to become a top player for the Montreal Canadiens in the future.»
- Igor Larionov He then added:
«At Torpedo, Konyushkov is the best defenseman in the offensive zone. I see great potential in him. He could become a player who leads the power play. It's an important role, because, like a quarterback, he understands his teammates' game and makes smart decisions that lead to goals.
That's his potential. Then, there's room for improvement. We want him to improve his shooting technique and shoot more, because he knows how to find a shooting lane.»
- Igor Larionov
This is really exciting for the future!
And we can agree that even if Bogdan doesn't become a Mikhail Sergachev, it certainly looks like he could possibly become a very interesting player for the Montreal Canadiens in the future.
He's definitely a name to remember, without a doubt!
Konyushkov, 21 years old, is a right-handed defenseman standing 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighing 176 pounds, drafted in the 4th round of the 2023 draft by the Canadiens.
He recorded 28 points in 65 KHL games in 2023-24.
You read that right. He's a right-handed defenseman, which obviously makes him even more interesting.
Don't be surprised if he's eventually added to the Montreal Canadiens' regular lineup.
