Before the start of the Canadiens' training camp and rookie camp, let's take a moment to look back on the Allen trade.
Last March 8th, Kent Hughes finally put an end to the three-goalie situation by trading Jake Allen to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for a conditional second-round pick.
A few months after this trade, is the Canadiens really on their way to adding another second-round pick to their stockpile?
The short answer is... no.
It's easy to forget, especially with all the personnel moves announced this summer, but the Devils acquired goaltender Jacob Markstrom.
What does this acquisition mean for Montreal?
Well, in the trade between the Canadiens and the Devils (involving Allen), there is a clause stating that the pick acquired by Montreal could still change.
There are two options:
1- If Jake Allen plays at least 40 games this season and his team qualifies for the playoffs, Kent Hughes receives a second-round pick.
2- If Jake Allen does not play 40 games this season, Kent Hughes receives a third-round pick.
So, with the addition of star goaltender Jacob Markstrom to New Jersey, you can probably guess that the Canadiens can forget about seeing Allen play 40 games this season, and thus, likely forget about getting their hands on another valuable second-round pick in the 2025 draft.
In fact, the Devils had long targeted acquiring Markstrom.

Furthermore, from this perspective, we have just learned that the Devils likely knew they were going to acquire Jacob Markstrom when they inserted this clause in the Jake Allen trade (with the Montreal Canadiens).
It was therefore a very well-calculated risk on their part.
Do you still consider this a good trade for Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens?
