As reported by Cole Shelton from Heavy.com a potential trade has emerged that could see the Canadiens acquire Mikael Granlund from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for two draft picks in 2025.
In return, Montreal would give up a second-round pick and a third-round pick, which belongs to the New Jersey Devils, while also receiving a sixth-round pick in 2027.
This could really help the Canadiens in their bid to secure a playoff spot as early as this season.
Granlund, who is entering the final year of his four-year, $20 million contract, had a productive season with the Sharks in 2023-24, tallying 60 points, including 12 goals and 48 assists in 69 games.
Acquiring him would not only solidify the team's depth at this position but also provide the Canadiens with some flexibility at the trade deadline. If the team finds itself out of playoff contention, Granlund could be traded to another team, offering the opportunity to recoup valuable assets.
Meanwhile, head coach Martin St. Louis approaches the 2024-25 season with confidence and ambition. He states that expectations are much higher than last year, both individually and collectively.
He expects his players to take a step forward and show clear signs of progress in this crucial stage of the team's development.
Here's how the Potential lines would look with Granlund:
Caufield - Suzuki - Slafkovsky
Granlund - Dach - Newhook
Kapanen - Dvorak - Anderson
Pezzetta - Evans - Gallagher
Once Laine returns, he would slot back into the second line, while Granlund would move to the third line, where he could play either center or wing.
