Two New York Islanders forwards have just been linked, as potential acquisitions, to Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens.

This comes from an article by TVA Sports.

According to what they mentioned in an article, Cal Clutterbuck and Matt Martin would be interesting additions for Martin St-Louis' squad.

They would address the Canadiens' lack of toughness, which has been an issue in the past, according to TVA Sports.

«If general manager Kent Hughes wants to do a bit of shopping a few weeks before the start of training camp, he could look towards two skaters known for their physical play.

Thus, forwards Cal Clutterbuck and Matt Martin remain unrestricted free agents after wearing the New York Islanders uniform in recent years.»

Islanders' general manager Lou Lamoriello loves these two players, who possibly formed the best fourth line in the entire NHL for many years (alongside Casey Cizikas), but he simply doesn't have the money to sign them.

Even though he would really like to bring them back to New York, Lamoriello has exactly zero dollars available on his $88 million salary cap.

In short, could Kent Hughes, who has the available cap space, bring one of these veterans in?

I'm not convinced, but well, TVA Sports raises a point.

They are two players with a lot of experience, and who are tailor-made for the NHL playoffs (and could pass on this mentality to the young players).

Clutterbuck, 36, is a forward who has amassed 293 points in 1,064 career games in the National Hockey League.

Last season with the Islanders, he scored 19 points in 82 games, while leading his team in hits.

Martin, 35, is a 6-foot-3, 215-pound forward who has amassed 176 points in 955 career games in the National Hockey League.

Last season with the Islanders, he scored 8 points in 57 games, while ensuring a strong physical presence in Patrick Roy's lineup. Matt Martin's name had already been linked to the Canadiens earlier this summer.
